A London 2012 Olympics gold medal which has been anonymously handed to the organisers of a charity auction to be held in Norfolk may have been one of around 200 made as spares.

It was given to auctioneer David James, who is also chairman of the Fakenham and District Branch of the Royal British Legion, the Eastern Daily Press reports.

It was left in an envelope marked for the attention of the Royal British Legion during a recent valuation day in Lowestoft, Suffolk.

Unlike medals given to winning athletes, however, this medal does not have an engraving around its rim stating which discipline it was for.
