A different way to assess languages in secondary schools has been introduced on the European Day of Languages.
The subject proficiency assessment (SPA), which will work in parallel with the SEC, will mean that assessment of a student's knowledge of a language will be divided into four areas.
Presently the SPA will be used for Italian before other languages are introduced in future.
This policy was introduced during an event “Learning Languages is Fun!” at Dar l-Ewropa, in Valletta.
Students from the San Ġorġ Preca College sang songs from different countries in various languages. The Drama Unit presented a brief production on the origins of languages.
It is expected that the SPA programme will lead to a reduction in the number of students with no accredited certification in languages on leaving compulsory schooling, while offering an alternative route to obtaining certification in language/subject proficiency at levels 1, 2 and 3 of Malta Qualifications Framework.
