A Gozitan woman has been cleared of attempting to bribe social workers during a separation case.

Maria Georgette Spiteri Gambin, 42, from Ghasri, had been charged with attempting to bribe two social workers in November and December 2010.

Police Inspector Frank Tabone told Magistrate Neville Camilleri that social worker Stephanie Muscat claimed that the accused had, on different occasions, attempted to bribe her.

The social workers had been appointed by the court to ensure rights of access of Ms Spiteri's husband, Michael Gambin, to his three children.

Ms Muscat claimed Ms Spiteri had tried to bribe her while another social worker, Peter Paul Portelli, claimed that one day Ms Spiteri's brother, Eledon Spiteri, a police sergeant, had called him to meet and gave him an envelope which he said was from his sister. Inside the envelope there were two €50 notes.

In her defence, Ms Spiteri claimed that the money was for various photocopies Mr Portelli had done during their meetings.

Magistrate Camilleri noted that the prosecution did not manage to prove its case and cleared Ms Spiteri of the charges brought against her.
