A Somali man has been conditionally discharged for two years after admitting to attempting to steal from a homeless man as he slept on a bus stop on the Sliema front.

32-year-old Abdi Ahmed Ali was seen by police rummaging through the man's belongings at around 2.40am on Tuesday.

The court heard the homeless man lives in a garage where he only had water and electricity. Nothing was stolen.

Before Magistrate Josette Demicoli, the man pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him and was conditionally discharged for two years.

Inspector Jason Francis Sultana prosecuted, while lawyer Joe Ellis was legal aid.
