I am a lover of animals and have helped the animal welfare society, SPCA, since I came to live in Malta 21 years ago through fundraising, attending functions and collecting newspapers which are used, I understand, as bedding for the animals.

I always delivered the newspapers, when I had a pile of them, to the headquarters at Floriana. Unfortunately, I had an accident at home last December and, as a result, had to give up driving because I am 80 years of age and practically disabled.

After the accident, I spoke to the lady in charge in Floriana and she said I should continue to collect the newspapers and, when I had a pile, phone the headquarters and their van would collect them.

I rang the headquarters atthe end of April, when I had a pile of newspapers, but got no response to my numerous phone calls over a five-week period. I then wrote to the chairman of the SPCA on May 24 but, again, got no answer.

However, at least, the newspapers were collected.

I had collected another pile by August but, once again, a similar story: no response.

I hope the animals are not being ignored in the same way.
