An elderly man admitted in court this afternoon that he enjoyed throwing a bucketful of urine on his neighbour as he walked out of the garage of the block where they live.

Giovanni Caruana, 77, from Sliema, had been urinating in a bucket which he left to ferment in the sun, claiming that he did so because he liked its smell.

He denied having intentionally fermented the urine to throw it at his neighbour with whom he had problems. The issues date back some two decades when Mr Caruana bought property from the victim’s father and this was later served with an enforcement notice.

Noel Agius, who was at the receiving end of the golden shower, told Magistrate Josette Demicoli how on Tuesday evening, at around 6.30pm, he went into his garage to get something and when he emerged, he saw what looked like fresh spit on the ground.

As soon as he looked up that he saw the accused in the balcony and seconds later got showered with what he imagined was water. It was only later that he realised it was not.

“I shower with fresh water every day and I know what fresh water smells like,” he told the court. He said that although at that point he challenged him to come down, he got onto his motorbike and went straight to the police station to file a report.

The elderly man was found guilty of the crime and of breaching a court order not to approach or speak to the Agius family. She placed him on probation for three years but did not order his re-arrest and the revocation of his bail.
