The Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sport (GħĠS) has teamed up with Public Broadcasting Services to hold a seminar for local sports journalists entitled ‘The Development of Sports Services on Television’.

The seminar, which is being organised in collaboration with Italian TV station RAI, will take place on October 6 and 7 at the Le Meridien Hotel, St Julian’s.

Gianfranco Coppola and Stefano Mattei, two Italian sports journalists and football commentators, will be the main speakers during the seminar.

Dr Coppola and Mattei are regular contributors on popular football programmes such as Stadio Sprint, Dribbling, Domenica Sportiva and 90 Minuto.

Other speakers during the seminar will be Pierre Cassar, chief executive of the Broad-casting Authority, and Malta FA general secretary Bjorn Vassallo.

Dr Tonio Portughese, the PBS chairman, told a conference call yesterday that when he received the proposal from the GħĠS to hold the seminar, he didn’t think twice before accepting.

“When the Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sport contacted me, I immediately accepted their proposal,” Dr Portughese said at the PBS Creativity Hub.

“I got in touch with RAI to send us two speakers for the seminar.

“PBS sees this event as a continuation of the company’s investment in local sport and a good opportunity to ensure that local sports commentators offer a more professional service to the Maltese audience.”

Charles Camenzuli, the GħĠS president, urged sports journalists to take part in the seminar as he believes it will be of great benefit for them, especially those who provide TV commentaries from sports events on a regular basis.

“The seminar will reap significant benefits for local sports journalists,” Camenzuli said.

“Dr Coppola and Mr Mattei will surely give the participants useful guidelines and training on television coverage of sports events.

“Besides, the participation of Pierre Cassar and Bjorn Vassallo, who also worked in the sports media industry, will also be of great interest.”

Camenzuli thanked PBS chair-man Portughese, chief executive Anton Attard and head of sports Peter Cossai for their co-operation.
