The Church in Malta will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the episcopal ordination of Mgr Joseph Mercieca with thanksgiving Mass on Monday, the Curia said.

Archbishop Paul Cremona will lead the Concelebrated Mass at 6.30pm at Mdina Cathedral.

The celebrants will include the Nucio Mgr Aldo Cavalli, Gozo Bishop Mario Grech, Auxiliary Bishop Charles Scicluna and Bishop Joe Asessandro OFM.

Mgr Mercieca will assist.

Mgr Mercieca was appointed Auxiliary Bishop on July 27, 1974 and consecrated bishop on September 29 of the same year.

He became Archbishop on November 29,1976 and took over the leadership of the archdiocese from Archbishop Michael Gonzi, keeping the post until January 26, 2007.

He is now 85.
