The overseas press

L’Echo reports the Belgian authorities have prevented several attacks by jihadist fighters returning home from Syria and by sympathisers with the Islamic State militants. 

Euronews says heavy clashes broke out between the Islamic State militants and Kurdish fighters only miles from the Syrian border town of Kobani, where the Islamic State group was bombarding villagers with tanks, artillery and multiple rocket launchers.  

Ad Dustour reports the Jordanian authorities have arrested 11 Sunni Jihadists of the Islamic State who confessed they were planning attacks in the country.  

AGI says a dinghy loaded with migrants sank 30 miles off the eastern coast of Libya. The Italian Coast Guard alerted a Singaporean cargo ship which was closest to the area of the wreck. Crew reported several dead bodies were floating in the water. Fifty-five people have been rescued, while around 40 are still missing.

Zhurnal reports that during a visit to Albania Pope Francis has warned that religion could never be used to justify violence.  

Al Jazeera says despite the announcement of a UN-brokered agreement, a series of explosions were heard across the Yemeni capital of Sanaa in clashes between Houthi rebels and government forces.  

An Iraq war veteran accused of scaling a fence and making it into the White House before the Secret Service stopped him posed no threat to anyone and needed counselling and not prosecution, members of his family said. The Washington Post says Omar Gonzalez, 42, was arrested Friday and is expected in federal court later today.

The New York Times reports celebrities and political leaders joined some 600,000 in a mass rally in New York as part of a global protest demanding urgent action on climate change.  

Thousands of Russians marched through Moscow to protest against the Kremlin’s involvement in the Ukraine crisis, in the country’s first major anti-war rally since fighting erupted in April, AFP reported. 

LBC Radio reports racist abuse directed at Liverpool’s Mario Balotelli on Twitter is being investigated by police. The striker received a string of racist messages after he reacted to Manchester United’s shock 5-3 defeat at Leicester City by posting: “Man Utd...LOL.”
