A call for expressions of interest is to be issued calling on people in the teaching profession to become first aiders in their schools. That will allow them to administer urgent life-saving medication.

The call follows agreement reached between the Ministry of Education and the Malta Union of Teachers.

Schools currently do not have designated people to administer medication to pupils facing life-or-death situations. Teachers have been following a directive given to them by their union not to administer the medication in view of a legal vacuum.

Emergency situations have cropped up in the past involving children with food allergies, diabetes and those who suffer asthma attacks, among others.

In terms of the agreement, the chosen teachers will receive training in First Aid and other life-saving procedures.
