My father, Reginald Baynton, was a seaman on the Malta convoy that broke through the German blockade and led the relief of Malta. Although his medal was awarded to him in 1992, he was never able to return to the island and passed away in December 2005 at the age of 83.

He was made, along with other colleagues on the Brisbane Star at the age of 20, an honorary citizen of Valletta at the beginning of the 21st century.

I have come to Malta with his paperwork and medal to see for myself the island for which my father risked his life.

My husband and I, although English, now live in the USA and will be here until October 3.

We will be visiting all the sites and the war museum.

Based on his countless stories to me over the years, I know that he would have loved to be with us and, in spirit, it may well be so.
