It really doesn’t take a lot to distract us does it? Fifty years of independence slithered down the drain as soon as we got the first whiff of royalty on our shores this weekend.

In the meantime, while Prince William did his thing and waved at the masses who turned up to pay homage, we’ve had Valletta and Buskett practically taken hostage by those who believe that the law doesn’t apply to them.

Good thing that the prince did not have thought bubbles around his head as he went around his official duties on the other side of the island. I can almost picture what they would have read; “Ah, 50 years without us and the natives haven’t quite figured out the whole acting in a civilised manner thing.”

Also in the meantime, while 90% of Malta was happy showing off the fruits of our independence by waving the British flag, it’s been barely a week since some 500 migrants drowned 300 miles off Malta.

Their bodies are still floating somewhere close and, should they ever be found, no-one is going to be waving any flags in honour of their useless deaths. Ah no, the natives haven’t quite figured out compassion either, and as for our priorities.... well, top of the list seems to be waving flags at royalty.

More on the local news front, we’ve recently had our bishops show the true Christian spirit by encouraging us to adopt “Christian families from countries where Christians are persecuted”.

As for all the other non-Christian families who also find themselves in a spot of trouble... well, good luck and all, but don’t come knocking on our door. Nope, the natives haven’t quite figured out the selfless charity part either.

But there’s no cause for worry, because we have the whole ‘waving flags at royalty’ down pat.
