Snaps of sunburned tourists in front of exotic monuments have been a travel staple for years, long before the online selfie craze took off.

But while taking a few pictures is a good way to document your trip, people with an interest in photography now have the chance to learn from a Maltese professional in Morocco.

Freelance photographer Rene Rossignaud has worked in war zones in Iraq, Libya and Syria and, working with organiser Faye Mallia, he will fulfill a long-held ambition to take a small group of photographers to Morocco for four days in November.

“People can bring a professional camera or a pocket camera – if you want to waste your money and come with your iPhone, it can be an iPhone camera,” said Rene.

What we’re doing is not only for the photography, it’s for thrill-seekers

“What we’re doing is not only for the photography, it’s for the thrill-seekers, to do something a bit different. We could have chosen Sicily or Tunisia, but I’m the type of guy who says start something with a bang.”

Both leaders will accompany the travellers on a night trip to Marrakesh’s main souk which will offer the chance to capture the colourful confusion of shoppers and monkey and snake charmers, followed by a journey across the Atlas Mountains to the ancient mud city Ait Ben Haddou.

“Having the joy of sleeping in the middle of the desert is the peak of it for me,” said Rene.

“It’s the middle of nowhere, so there’s going to be wild snakes, wild scorpions… that’s the fun bit, sleeping under the stars in a Berbers camp and eating their food.”

There is no direct flight to Morocco from Malta, meaning the adventure begins with a plane ticket to Paris.

From there the group of 10 to 15 photographers will board a budget airline flight to Marrakesh, which is an additional expense as these cannot be block booked in advance.

“The idea is we’re going to take you there and make it special,” said Faye. “Having me there is enough,” countered Rene.

• The trip costs €850 for all accommodation, transport and excursions, apart from the Paris-Morocco flight, and runs from November 26 to 30. Bookings close mid-October. For details, e-mail info@creativeholidaysmalta.com or see www.creativeholidaysmalta.com.
