I read Alan Deidun’s article ‘Angelina to Victor Borg’s rescue’ (The Sunday Times of Malta, September 7) with great interest.

I am a German climber on holiday in Malta with my family. The Sunday before last, we went over to Gozo thinking we could have a nice day at Mġarr ix-Xini, enjoying the rock faces in the valley as well as the beach and snorkelling.

On our way, just outside Xewkija, we were rudely turned away by a guard saying the whole area was closed for “filming activities” until November.

How can a whole area be fenced off to the public for three months, just because Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt seem to have decided that this part of Gozo now belongs to them?

Surely they are not there all the time? As a climber visiting Malta for the second time, I would like to point out that local climbers have put a lot of effort into developing this area. They not only set up new routes, they also clear the valley of rubbish, making it an enjoyable place for everyone.

I have read on the website of the Malta Climbing Club that climbers recently put up new routes in Mġarr ix-Xini valley. This meant a lot of enthusiasm, time and effort.

To me, it is outrageous that nobody is allowed to enjoy this area for months just because American film-makers want to take over.
