Maltese WHO director general Margaret Chan and Pan American Health Organisation director Carissa Etienne recently appointed Godfrey Xuereb as the PAHO and WHO representative for Barbados and the eastern Caribbean countries.

Dr Xuereb, who is based in Barbados, is responsible for the work of PAHO and WHO in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Anguilla, Montserrat, the British Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guiana.

Following his undergraduate and post-graduate studies at Kings College, University of London, Dr Xuereb worked as principal dietitian at St Luke’s Hospital in Malta and as public health nutritionist for the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute in Jamaica.

In 2008, he joined the WHO’s headquarters in Geneva, serving as technical and programme officer in the Department of Prevention of Non-communicable Diseases in the role of team leader for Population-based Prevention.
