Prime Minister Joseph Muscat this morning laid a wreath at the bust of former prime minister Nerik Mizzi in Valletta, to recall the 129th anniversary of his birth.

Nerik (Enrico) Mizzi was one of the leaders of the Nationalist Party before the war and was exiled to Uganda in 1942 by the British forces for his links with Italy.

On his return he re-assumed the helm of the PN and became Prime Minister in 1950. He died three months later, the only Prime Minister of Malta to die in office. He was granted a state funeral which was attended by the top British military and civil authorities in Malta - just eight years after he was exiled.

Enrico Mizzi was the son of one of the founders of the PN, Fortunato Mizzi.
