A 70-year-old Marsa man was yesterday conditionally discharged for two years after he admitted to smashing the windscreen of a bus that nearly ran him over.

Giorgio Magri was walking close to his residence in April last year when the bus passed by and almost hit him. He was furious at the driver, and passengers onboard the bus said they had nearly crashed twice between Valletta and Marsa.

Mr Magri started yelling at the driver, accusing him of driving negligently. The driver too reacted angrily, denying the pedestrian’s claims. Shocked and in a fit of anger, Mr Magri started punching the windscreen, smashing it in the process.

He admitted before Magistrate Anthony Vella to causing the damage and apologised for his behaviour, saying he had reacted that way because he was in shock. He paid €431 for the damage caused.

Discharging him on condition he does not commit another crime within two years, the magistrate warned Mr Magri to keep his emotions in check and control his anger.

“I do not go about smashing windscreens when I fear something,” the magistrate quipped.
