Prince William will be visiting Malta this weekend for the 50th anniversary celebrations of independence from Britain, Kensington Palace announced this morning.

He will be visiting the island instead of his wife Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, who was advised to cancel the trip.

The trip was meant to be the duchess's first overseas solo trip, but she has been suffering from a severe form of morning sickness since she announced she was pregnant with her second child.

The decision not to travel was taken by Prince William and Kate on the advice of the Duchess's doctors.

The visit itinerary remains unchanged.

Prince William is the first son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana.
