The rate of inflation in August dipped to -0.03 per cent, according to the National Statistics Office, which put this down to cheaper electricity rates and airfares.

There were higher private tuition fees, cigarette prices and household appliances.

The inflation rate as measured by the Retail Price Index stood at 1.5 per cent in August last year. The NSO said the 12-month moving average inflation rate was 0.35 per cent.
