I’m sure that Guido de Marco would have pushed for Malta to be the main protagonist in reforming the EU finances, thus ensuring that it cannot keep on submitting its accounts year after year as a true reflection of the expenditure without being endorsed by the auditors.

In other words people with-in Europe are voting for an international organisation that does not appear to be democratically accountable.

The costly exercise of the upheaval, from one month to another, of transferring the European Parliament venue to Strasbourg or Brussels, with all the administration this entails, is an embarrassment. Is it not time for one of these two cities to be designated as the home of the European Parliament and abort this costly exercise?

Can Maltese MEPs lead the way and although occupying only six seats out of more than 700, be a thorn in the EU’s side and not vote for the EU administration expenditure until the auditors have signified their agreement?

Then we, the people, can say at last that this organisation isn’t a gravy train and that our MEPs are indeed representing the people as de Marco would have liked.

At the unveiling of the de Marco statue the Prime Minister described him as one of the greatest statesmen Malta ever had, and he recalled the former political foe’s insistence that Malta punched above its weight in its Mediterranean role. So come on our MEPs, put Malta on the map – be a pain within the European Parliament and be noticed!
