The Maltese women’s national team ended their commitments in the 2015 World Cup qualifiers with another heavy defeat against Switzerland at the Tedesco Stadium.

Pierre Brincat’s girls took to the field determined to try and limit the damage against the superior Swiss and looked well place to reach their modest objective after conceding only once in the opening 45 minutes.

But the Swiss stepped up their game after the interval, netting four times to seal a comfortable w and end their campaign on top of Group 3 on 28 points.

Malta finished bottom with no points and no goals scored.

The Swiss were dangerous from the outset. After four minutes Ese-osa Aigbogun hit wide from close in.

They took the lead on 19 minutes when Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic tapped the ball home from an Aigbogun low cross.

Midway through the half Dorianne Theuma tried her luck from the distance but her effort was blocked by Swiss goalkeeper Stenia Michel.

Keoney Demicoli, the Malta goalkeeper, then effected a fine save to deny Fabienne Humm while Vane-ssa Bernauer missed the target from routine distance.

Switzerland added a second goal on 51 minutes when Vanessa Burka fired home from a Lara Keller cross.

The visitors kept up the pressure and on 56 minutes Noelle Maritz had an effort cleared off the line while minutes later Fabienne Humm saw her effort hit the bar.

On 68 minutes Burki pounced on a poor clearance to make it 3-0.

Six minutes from time Crno-gorcevic added a fourth after good build-up play from Burki.

Crnogorcevic completed her hat-trick four minutes from time when she converted a penalty after Rebecca D’Agostino had fouled Bangerter in the area.
