The Malta women’s national team ended its commitments in the 2015 World Cup qualifying campaign today with a 5-0 defeat to group leaders Switzerland at the Tedesco Stadium.

Pierre Brincat’s girls were determined to complete their Group 3 appearances with a positive showing and they looked on course for a respectable result when they only trailed the superior Swiss 1-0 at the half-time interval.

Ana Maria Crnogorčević put the visitors ahead after 10 minutes when she steered the ball past Malta goalkeeper Keoney Demicoli after being set up by Eseiosa Aiogbun.

However, on the change of ends the Swiss stepped up a gear and on 52 minutes Lara Keller set up Vanessa Burki who made it 2-0.

The Swiss striker was at it again on 68 minutes when she grabbed her second of the match and her team’s third.

The visitors were not finished yet and they wrapped up their win with two late goals from Crnogorcevic, the second from the penalty spot, to complete a hat-trick and seal a 5-0 victory for the Swiss.
