The National Museum of Archaeology will be open free of charge on Sunday. Visitors will also be able to visit the exhibition “Malta, the great story of a small island-nation through 100 objects”.

Artefacts in the museum, in Republic Street, Valletta, date back to Malta’s Neolithic period.

Highlights on display include the ‘Sleeping Lady’ from the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, the ‘Venus of Malta’ from Ħaġar Qim, bronze daggers from the Bronze Age layers at Tarxien Temples, and the Horus and Anubis pendant and the anthropomorphic sarcophagus from the Phoenician Period.

The exhibition, on parts of the upper floor spans all the way to and covers the milestone constitutional achievements of the past 50 years of the nation’s history. While the setup is reminiscent of a timber vessel from the past, the interpretation of the objects makes use of the latest technology.

Those visiting the museum on Sunday will be able to purchase a number of Heritage Malta publications at a reduced price and benefit from a 10 per cent discount on membership.

For the occasion, a limited number of commemorative coins of the 50th anniversary of Independence will also be available for purchase.
