Over the years, Maltacom (the former government-owned landline telephone provider) and Enemalta (and its predecessor electricity supply provider) often fixed overhead wires haphazardly and chaotically, some even crossing main thoroughfares.
One often sees old unconnected wires left in place, with new wires placed over them, creating a spaghetti-like pattern, as in the picture.
One also often sees overhead electricity cables sagging dangerously low from one electricity pole to another.
This state of affairs is found in many large cities of underdeveloped countries. In this aspect, Malta resembles a third world country.
The government should embark on a project to rid our streets of unwanted wires, neatly straighten those that are required and remove overhead wires that cross streets.
Also, wherever possible, the government should introduce or else encourage systems that do not rely on overhead wires for telephony and electricity supply.
