The Malta women’s team wrap up their commitments in the 2015 World Cup qualifying campaign when they take on Switzerland at the Tedesco Stadium this afternoon (kick-off 5pm).

The match holds little significance for both teams as Switzerland have already assured themselves of a place in next year’s World Cup finals in Canada as Group 3 winners while the Maltese are rooted to the bottom of the group with no points from nine matches.

The Swiss have dominated the group, winning eight matches and drawing one. Barring a meltdown of mammoth proportions, Switzerland should end their campaign with another victory against a Maltese team who have yet to find the net in these qualifiers and come into this match following a heavy 8-0 defeat to second-placed Denmark in Vejle last weekend.

For Pierre Brincat’s girls, the main goal this afternoon is to limit the damage as they seek to avoid another drubbing against the Swiss who hammered Malta 11-0 last April.

Rachel Cuschieri, currently playing for Cypriot club Apollon Limassol, will miss today’s match as she is recovering from surgery.

With Switzerland already qualified as group winners, Denmark and Iceland are fighting for second place and a play-off spot.

The Danes, second on 18 points, host Israel while Iceland, who are two points behind, play Serbia.

Playing today: 17.00 Malta vs Switzerland; 18.00 Denmark vs Israel; 19.00 Iceland vs Serbia.

Standings: Switzerland 25 points; Denmark 18; Iceland 16; Serbia 10; Israel 9; Malta 0.
