The future of triathlon in Malta looks rosy as a new generation of young triathletes is being nurtured and offered opportunities to specialise in disciplines of this sport.
The latest youngster to benefit from this is Neil Markham who, at the age of 19, has already established himself as one of the top triathletes in the country.
Markham has just returned from a training camp in Ravne Na Koroškem, Slovenia. The camp was organised by the Development Committee of the European Triathlon Union.
Markham is the third youth from Triathlon Malta to attend such training camp this summer after Nina Zammit and Shaun Galea had a similar experience in Lithuania earlier on.
Last year, Hannah Pace took part in a training camp in Croatia.
“This training camp was a useful experience for me as I learned how to master the techniques of all three triathlon disciplines,” Markham said in a Triathlon Malta statement.
“Furthermore, I also had the opportunity to participate in my first international race which served as a real eye-opener but it was a great experience.
“Another positive aspect of the camp was that I made new friendships with triathletes from all over the continent.
“I would like to wholeheartedly thank the Malta Triathlon Federation for giving me this opportunity and also the European Triathlon Union for putting on such a high-quality training camp.”
Cyprian Dalli, the president of the Malta Triathlon Federation said: “Our federation believes in the potential of its younger generation of athletes and is pursuing various paths for those children and youths who are willing to participate in this sport.”
Triathlon Malta will be organising two national multisport championships in the coming days and weeks.
The first ever National Aquathlon Championships will be held tomorrow in Marsaxlokk and the National Triathlon Championships, the season’s grand finale, are scheduled for October 12 in Marfa.
