Verratti: Italy midfielder Marco Verratti has signed a one-year extension to his contract at Paris St Germain. Verratti, 21, has made 88 appearances for the club since joining from Serie B Pescara in the summer of 2012. He said: “When I think about my career, I only see myself at Paris St Germain. I want to continue winning trophies with this club and continue to improve as a footballer alongside truly world-class players.”

In China: Guangzhou Evergrande took another step towards a fourth successive Chinese Super League title with a 3-0 win at Shanghai Dongya to maintain their six-point advantage over Beijing Guoan at the top of the table. Marcello Lippi’s side went ahead with a goal in the seventh minute from winger Gao Linb before goals from the prolific Brazilian Elkeson gave them a comfortable win.

Rainstorm: Resurgent Boca Juniors were 1-0 up against Racing Club looking for a third successive win when their match on Sunday at a rain-lashed La Bombonera was abandoned at halftime due to a waterlogged pitch. Leaders River Plate also had their match at Arsenal, which had been due to kick off later, suspended because of the torrential rain in the capital.

Panathinaikos: Panathinaikos’s stuttering start to the season continued on Sunday as the Greens slumped to a surprise 1-0 defeat to minnows AEL Kalloni. Giannis Anastasiou’s side were not able to salvage anything after falling behind to Leozinho’s 35th-minute strike. The Brazilian midfielder also hit the woodwork just before time.

Keane: Robbie Keane missed a penalty as the Los Angeles Galaxy were pegged back to draw 1-1 with the San Jose Earthquakes in California. LA Galaxy went ahead after 28 minutes when Omar Gonzalez nodded home Stefan Ishizaki’s corner, before Keane clattered the crossbar from the spot after the ball struck San Jose defender Jason Hernandez’s hand in the area. The Quakes made them pay when Chris Wondolowski prodded home in the 66th minute.
