San Ġiljan Allcare’s left-hander Matthew Zammit is the 2014 Waterpolo Player of the Year, the ASA announced.
Zammit helped his team qualify for the Championship Pool in the BOV National League this summer. However, the Saints failed to produce a decent challenge in the most crucial phase of the competition and had to settle for third place in the final standings.
The runner-up behind Zammit in the best player award is Steve Camilleri, of league champions and KO winners Neptunes Grimaldi.
Camilleri, the joint top scorer in the league with 72 goals, had won the player of the year accolade for the last three years.
The First Division Player of the Year honour went to Sean Xerri de Caro, who donned the Marsaxlokk colours this summer.
Xerri de Caro topped the poll for best player in his category ahead of Ta’ Xbiex’s Otis Zammit.
The ASA said the awards presentation ceremony will take place on November 27, the same day the association will hold its annual general meeting.
Meanwhile, national team coaches Karl Izzo, Anthony Farrugia and Adrian Cachia have summoned a group of players, including a few promising juniors, for training ahead of two upcoming international tournaments which will be played at Tal-Qroqq.
Training starts this evening at the National Pool.
