Meat production increased by 5.5 per cent during the second quarter this year to almost 3,000 tons, the National Statistics Office said.

The increase was mainly due to a rise in the slaughter of pigs and poultry by 10.3 and 0.5 per cent respectively.

This year, 557,331 chickens were slaughtered when compared to 636,936 in the same period during 2012. A total of 1,015 heads of cattle were slaughtered, up from 947 in the same period in 2012, while 18,390 pigs were killed when compared to 16,556.

The producer value of animals slaughtered at licensed slaughterhouses in the period under review amounted to €6.6 million, up 1.7 per cent when compared to the second quarter of 2013.
