Melita 2
Pembroke Athleta 1

A goal from substitute Antoine Attard five minutes from time gave Melita the derby spoils against Pembroke yesterday.

Pembroke were the better side early on. They forged ahead after only three minutes when Abder Dos Santos headed into his own net from a Roderick Bajada free-kick.

Pembroke kept moving forward and Bajada nearly deceived keeper Philip Schranz from a corner but the Melita no.1 managed to keep the ball out.

A minute later Ariel Laudisi saw his grounder saved by Schranz.

Melita hit back and on 20 minutes Luke Sammut’s fine solo run finished with the striker hitting inches wide.

The Amateurs were coming more into the picture. Seven minutes from half-time, Sammut finished off some good work on the flank by Kurt Coleiro.

On resumption, Melita continued to hold an edge over their opponents.

Goalkeeper Andrea Cassar was kept busy. Eight minutes from time, Julian Galea’s effort was neutralised by the Pembroke keeper.

But, on 85 minutes, Attard, who had came on for Coleiro, scored the winner following another fine move by Melita inside the Pembroke half.

Late on, Ayrton Azzopardi’s free-kick hit the bar. Pembroke argued that the ball had crossed the line but the referee deemed otherwise.
