Jack Dominion, a leading clinical psychiatrist and writer on understanding marriage, love and sexuality, died on August 11 in London. He was often a guest of the Cana Movement through his 40-year frienship with the movement’s founder, Mgr Charles Vella. His first visit to the Cana Movement was in 1978.
Dominion, who was born in Greece in 1929, was a founder of the Catholic Marriage Advisory Council in London. He also founded the Marriage Research Centre (now OnePlusOne) in 1971, with whom we always collaborated.
His early book, Marital Breakdown (1968), was an immediate international best seller. This was followed by 30 books on marriage and love. He had shocked traditional Church circles when he wrote of sexual intercourse as a liturgical act, i.e. the fulfilment of the sacrament of marriage.
It was Dominion who helped develop the marriage preparation courses in such areas as developing human skills and marital relationship. At Middlesex Hospital he had some Maltese patients, whom he welcomed with great Mediterranean warmth.
The Cana Movement, through Mgr Vella, extended its condolences and prayers to his children, while Mass was celebrated for his repose.
