Fifty-eight students have successfully completed ICT courses organised by the Foundation for Technology Accessibility (Fita).

The courses were held at the ICT Institute at Mcast, St Theresa Girls College, Mrieħel, the SIS Training Centre, Aċċess, Vittoriosa, and Santa Martha Day Centre in Gozo.

Back in 2003, Fita, together with its partners, including the Education Directorate and Mcast, ran a pilot project delivering ICT courses as part of its goal to address the digital divide and promoting opportunities for improving the quality of life of people with disability.

CEO Stanley Debono explained how access to computers played an important part in providing independence for individuals with sensory, physical and learning disabilities.

Michael Micallef, Fita’s officer evaluating ICT accessibility certification, who is blind, said 95 per cent of people with disability can use a standard computer, while five per cent need special software and equipment.
