The inaugural race of the new Formula E championship ended with a dramatic last corner crash today and former formula one driver Nick Heidfeld was lucky to escape uninjured.

Lucas di Grassi won the race in Beijing after Nicolas Prost, who had been running first from pole, shunted Heidfeld as he was about to overtake him on the run down to the final corner. Heidfeld's car was launched into the air and landed a considerable distance away upside down.

Heidfeld somehow managed to get out unaided and remonstrated with Prost.

Lucas di Grassi, who had driving in third, inherited the lead and won the race.

Formula E is the world's first all-electric car racing series.
