The first national monument in honour of our national poet Dun Karm was unveiled in Żebbug in October 1971 by the late President Anton Buttigieg. Dr Buttigieg interrupted his speech several times when he was overcome by emotion and shed some tears.

I am sure that if he were to read the contents of the piece by mayor Alfred Grixti he would shed more tears over the banal argument put forward by Grixti in defence of not taking immediate action to replace the missing letter ‘R’.

The mayor recently added an unrelated upright marble slab which is completely incompatible with the green and well-kept surroundings of this monument.

I am sure my distinguished colleagues who worked so hard to realise this monument will join me in deploring the excuse for failing to immediately repair damage to a public monument.
