The letter ‘Deadly bells’ was a welcome diversion from the current cascade of empty talk and speculation devoted to the internal squabbles of the Church in Malta.

I have two suggestions with regard to the question of ringing.

A short joyous peal should be reserved for the birth of a baby in the parish and that may well be extended to weddings. The famous two verses in a song sung by Judy Garland, “Church bells are ringing... for me and my girl”, would become a reality.

This will, of course, raise some eyebrows.

I would also suggest a guild of bell ringers to be founded to establish the appropriate notes to be rung for every occasion. Guidance would be welcome to obtain the best use of bell ringing without causing undue inconvenience to the people living near the church.
