Materazzi: Former Italy de-fender Marco Materazzi has joined Chennai in the new Indian Super League (ISL) following in the footsteps of former national team-mate Alessandro Del Piero. The 41-year-old Materazzi will be player-manager of the team co-owned by Bollywood actor Abhi-shek Bachchan, a league spokes-man said yesterday.

Chelsea: Reports in Spain said Chelsea have expressed an interest in Barcelona prodigy Xavier Simons. The 11-year-old has been hailed as a star for the future having impressed in Barca’s famed La Masia set-up. It seems that Chelsea have already made an offer to bring the Dutch midfielder’s family to West London. However, it is understood that Barcelona have held positive talks with Simons’s parents, convincing him to stay.

Jonathan: Inter defender Jonathan is set for talks with the club to discuss a new deal. The 28-year-old Brazilian’s contract expires next June which means he will be available on a Bosman if he doesn’t renew before the end of the campaign. The right-back joined Inter in the summer of 2011 after agreeing a €5m fee with Santos.

Jones: Man. United defender Phil Jones will be out for four weeks with a torn hamstring after limping off during England’s victory over Switzerland, manager Louis van Gaal said. The 22-year-old picked up the injury during the second half of England’s 2-0 win in Basel on Monday but played on for about 15 minutes before eventually being substituted after 77 minutes.

Late tests: Everton manager Roberto Martinez will make a late check on midfielder Leon Osman and striker Samuel Eto’o ahead of today’s trip to West Brom. Osman (calf) was injured in a friendly earlier this week, while Eto’o has been hampered by a groin problem since the defeat to Chelsea before the international break.

Baggies boost: Ben Foster is set to hand West Brom a boost for today’s Premier League visit of Everton after returning following his thumb injury. The goalkeeper withdrew from the England squad after aggravating an existing problem but trained yesterday.
