Hibernians president Tony Bezzina is confident that his club have what it takes to mount a strong challenge for the BOV Premier League title this season as yesterday he unveiled a new two-year sponsorship deal with vaughanboxing.tv.

“Our aim is to win the league but that depends on the strength of the squad,” Bezzina said.

“With the acquisitions we have made this season, I believe that we have got the potential to challenge for the championship.”

The financial injection from the new sponsors represents a boost for Hibs, who are on maximum points after their opening three matches, ahead of their first-round meeting with Valletta tomorrow.

“As you know, Hibernians are not famous for organising too many media calls but we are holding this briefing today because this is a special day for our club,” Bezzina said.

“I am now in a position to announce that vaughanboxing.tv have accepted to be part of our sponsorship family.

“It is not only the first team that will benefit from this agreement but also the stadium as the sponsors have also agreed to put up a massive advert on the old scoreboard. The company’s logo will also be displayed on the back of the club shirts.

“Thanks to this partnership, we have secured the signing of (Malta defender) Andrei Agius who hails from Paola.

“Now, I believe that our present team is more competitive than it was in the past few seasons.”

Agius, who is expected to make his Hibs debut in tomorrow’s crunch match, was present for yesterday’s news conference along with the club’s other new recruits, namely goalkeeper Henry Bonello, Brazilian forward Jorginho and Spanish defender Rui da Garcia Gomes. Hibs captain Andrew Cohen was also in attendance.

Bezzina, the longest-serving club president in the Premier League, also spoke about the club’s policy on young players who receive offers to play abroad.

The Hibs supremo stressed that the club will not stand in the way of those who have the opportunity to secure a better future by going abroad.

“Our policy is to help them,” Bezzina said.

“Jean Paul Farrugia is a case in point as he is now playing for Spartak Trnava on a season-long loan.”

Bezzina also announced that Hibs have signed a sponsorship agreement with Laguna Restaurant.

He publicly thanked former team manager Jesmond Abela, now employed by the Malta FA as operations manager of the technical centre, for his sterling service throughout the years and welcomed the appointment of Jeffrey Farrugia who was instrumental in the sponsorship deal with vaughanboxing.tv.

Steve Vaughan Jr, the former president of Floriana FC, expressed his delight at the company’s association with Hibernians, yesterday.

“People know me for being the former president of Floriana FC but that’s all behind me now and we are looking to moving forward with Hibernians,” Vaughan Jr told reporters.
