A Norwegian gambler has been fined €500 for harassment after he came to Malta because of his obsession with a Maltese woman working for an igaming company.

Steffen Sorvik, 25, was also handed a one-month jail term suspended for two years.

Mr Sorvik met Stacy Giordmaina while playing in an online gaming site and the two exchanged emails and phone numbers and contacted each other.

The friendship turned sour when the accused became obsessed with this victim, Police Inspector Roderick Agius told Magistrate Charmaine Galea said.

Mr Sorvik continuously sent Ms Giordmaina e-mails and text messages which she ignored and he flew to Malta to find her. He went to meet her at her office and the police were called.

Magistrate Charmaine Galea sentenced him to one month in prison suspended for two years and fined him €500.

She warned Mr Sorvik he would be sent to prison if he tried to contact Ms Giordmaina and insisted that their relationship, if there was one to begin with, had ended.

The victim was placed under a protection order for two years.
