Lawyers, legal procurators and notaries will no longer have to waste precious time queuing in the civil registry to track the progress of their cases thanks to a new IT system.

They will be able to access the information from their office computer, tablet or smart phone through an online case management system that will be up and running on October 1, Justice Minister Owen Bonnici announced this morning.

The system will allow them to track the progress of civil cases by, for example, checking if parties in the case were notified.

Dr Bonnici said that the acts of civil cases, that include all documents filed, will also soon be online. This would reduce the workload in the court registry and lead to fewer cases being deferred unnecessarily.

He added that it was decided to open up the system only to lawyers, legal procurators and notaries so as to respect the right to privacy. These could access the system through their e-ID and following the approval of the Law Courts administration.

Law Courts director general Frank Mercieca said that each year some 50,000 documents were filed in the civil registry. The system was developed by MITA and is  currently being tested.

It will be accessible through the website justice.gov.mt.
