I read with interest the report on the outcome of the public consultation meeting held recently on the White Paper proposing changes to the drug laws (September 3).

Madam Justice Edwina Grima’s remarks on the important role of social workers in drug-related cases are fully justified and take me back some years when she was serving as a magistrate in Gozo.

I was called as a character witness on behalf of a client as his one-time social worker and I remember that she listened attentively and with great interest to what I had to say. She questioned my comments and thanked me for my intervention. One of the happier incidents in my career; something that reinforced my faith in the judiciary.
