A 24-year-old Frenchman was given a two-year jail term suspended for four years and fined €4,000 after he admitted to being naked in St Julian’s while drunk and punching a police sergeant.
Yohan Schwanke, a tourist, was charged with threatening and assaulting the officer and slightly injuring him on Saturday at 7.20am. He was also charged with being drunk and indecently dressed in public, disobeying police and breaching the peace.
Mr Schwanke said that, although he did not remember anything, he still wanted to plead guilty. He apologised for his actions and was willing to pay for any damage caused.
Magistrate Josette Demicoli heard that the accused was seen naked in St Julian’s near McDonald’s. He then crossed the road and jumped into the sea.
The sergeant ordered him to dress up, which he did. However, when he was being escorted to the nearby police station, the accused punched the officer, damaging his spectacles.
Police Inspector Jason Sultana prosecuted.
Lawyer Mark Mifsud Cutajar represented Mr Schwanke.
