Is it an exaggeration to state that the Maltese Church is in disarray? Are we functioning in a watered-down version of Christianity? Was this an inevitable result of Vatican Council II, with its sidelining of traditional Tridentine religious practices? Does the music we hear in our churches suit the spirituality of the celebration?

Is it true that too many priests are pandering to people, and adopting liturgical practices that have become questionable? Would a national priests’ conference return us to seriousness and sobriety, holiness and purity?

Christian Orthodox and Greek Catholic priests have kept their cassocks, and wear a prominent cross. They are not apologising for being strong believers and representatives of Christ’s flock. They do not have to please the fickle faithful all the time. They are still leaders preaching the Gospel.

There is much food for thought in the present Catholic context. Much has undoubtedly been attempted, and done, to lead the faithful. But stability appears to be missing. It is possible that a pause, and three steps backwards – turning back, or conversion – may be necessary at this stage?
