We have many awards in Malta and I don’t think one more would hurt. I would therefore like to suggest the creation of an award for bus drivers.

If this is accepted, I would like to nominate the driver of bus 123 who was on route 41 from Valletta to Ċirkewwa on August 30 and who passed through Naxxar Road, Birkirkara at 10.40am.

This driver gave the impression he was king of the road. He hooted at every vehicle to clear the way for him.

He accelerated very rapidly only to brake suddenly every 20 metres or so, sending commuters who were standing to the front of the bus and on the seated passengers.

Passengers were huffing and puffing as they couldn’t take it anymore. It was the most horrendous drive I and many others have ever experienced.

Not even in the most remote parts of Brazil did I witness such terrible, wreckless and irresponsible driving.

As an added bonus passengers were kept cool with a lot of water on the floor – from the air conditioner – and many seats were soaking wet. It was interesting seeing the passengers walk out of the bus with a wet backside.

On leaving the bus, one of the passengers dared ask the driver whoever gave him his licence. I will leave his reply and the language he used to your imagination.

A transport official outside the Ċirkewwa terminal was told about the driver’s behaviour.

I don’t know if anything was done as a result, but it was certainly worth a try.

Any other nominees?
