The 2014-2015 lecture programme of the University of the Third Age (U3E) will start on October 6, and applications from those interested in attending may be submitted as from September 15.

Each study unit consists of a series of eight sessions of two hours each held at the U3E’s main centre in Floriana or at its branches in Sliema, Cottonera or Gozo.

Lectures will be held from Monday to Thursday between 9 and 11am at the Floriana centre, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7pm at the Sliema branch, on Thursdays from 9 to 11am at the Cottonera branch and every Friday from 9.15 to 11.15am at the Gozo branch.

The study units at the Floriana centre are as follows:

Development of political parties in Malta, Part 5: 1963 onwards, by Joe Pirotta; A sustainable Maltese economy: an overview of the past, present and future, by Carl Camilleri; Understanding dementia, by Anthony Scerri; Maltese social artists, by John Sarè; The Great Siege of Malta 1565, by Vincent Zammit; Ħarsa lejn Malta llum, by Oliver Friggieri; The role of the EU in international relations, by Stephen Calleya; A basic first aid programme, by St John Ambulance; The Maltese legal system, by Kevin Aquilina; Healthy ageing, by Sina Bugeja; The concept of evil in the Scriptures, by Fr Marcello Ghirlando; Ageing: a sociological perspective, by Joseph Troisi; Id-drama fil-ħajja tagħna ta’ kuljum, by Marica Mizzi; A journey through Gozo’s history, by Fr Joseph Bezzina; Where is the Church going with Pope Francis, by Fr Renè Camilleri; Italian culture and civilisation in the Mediterranean, by Anna Porcheddu.

The study units at the Sliema centre are as follows:

The Church since Vatican Council II, by Fr Renè Camilleri; Malta and the Order of St John, by Emanuel Buttigieg; Introduction to Judaism, by Fr Marcello Ghirlando; Spanish for beginners, by Francesco Javier Ibanez Castejon; The State and the constitution of Malta, by Austin Bencini; Philosophical problems: an introduction by Joe Friggieri; Religious confraternities, by Tony Terribile; and Natural environment of the Maltese islands, by Sandro Lanfranco.

The study units at the Cottonera branch are as follows:

Il-Kostituzzjoni Maltija, by Ugo Mifsud Bonnici; Health promotion: a holistic approach, by Suzanne Piscopo; Family folklore, by Guido Lanfranco; and Practical first aid, by Anthony Scerri.

Application forms may be collected from and handed in at the U3E’s Floriana centre on the ground floor of the Catholic Institute, Floriana, from Monday to Thursday between 9 and 11am.
