Southern Comfort, a project launched by Cospicua parish church, held a soirée at the Sagra Familja hall in Cospicua to mark the teaching and character formation given to Cottonera children over the past year.

In a brief introduction, project manager Victor Micallef welcomed Spiro Mizzi foundation chairman Maurice Mizzi and his colleagues on the board: Fr Hilary Tagliaferro, John Grech and the foundation’s PRO Taryn Mizzi.

Parents, teachers, friends and others who gave a helping hand for the good of these children were also welcomed. This project was launched by Cospicua parish church in 2010 with the aim of helping the children of this area with their homework and with other difficulties they may encounter at school. Throughout these years, the foundation has generously sponsored Southern Comfort to cover the expenses connected with its activities.

The theme chosen this year was ‘Magic through poetry reading’, in the light of recent research held in Malta, whereby it resulted that the Maltese are far from avid readers. It also transpired that lack of reading was mostly felt in the south.

A set of poems in English and Maltese were read and acted out by the children, trained by drama tutor Emanuel Cassar and helped Ingrid Fiorentino. In between poems, magician Charles Tahir performed a little show.

Mr Mizzi presented €2,700 to the parish priest, after which the children sang a song from Mr Mizzi’s CD. Proceeds from the sale of the recently launched CD will go to the foundation.
