I refer to the article ‘The mystery of Valletta’s three-legged horse’ and specifically to the comment: “Austin Camilleri’s sculpture takes off from a simple premise: the fact that Malta, unlike other countries in northern Europe, has no equestrian monuments.”
I am sure I will be airing the feelings of many Maltese if I state that there are many human subjects more worthy of a sculpture than a three-legged horse. Let me begin with Nicolo Isouard, the bicentenary of whose death will fall on 2018. Then there are major Maltese composers born in Valletta, among them Paolo Nani, Antonio Nani, Girolamo Abos, Carmelo Pace, Pietro Paolo Bugeja, Vincenzo Bugeja, etc.
Perhaps, if these had been politicians or horses, a statue dedicated to them would have been put up long ago. But, then, they are simply highly-talented persons who have massively contributed to our national culture. I thought that V-18 was all about culture. However, I probably do not know what culture really is.
