On a recent visit to the Vittoriosa medieval Collachio to view the rehabilitation process of this iconic site with its 13th century houses, I called at the Auberge de France to meet the affable mayor John Boxall not least to show my appreciation for his long-standing commitment in the interest of this city and its ageing citizens.
It is to his credit that he has succeeded in instilling a deep civic pride and an interest in the historical and cultural heritage of this maritime city.
In his characteristic manners he enthusiastically discussed with me his projects in the pipeline; the ancient fortifications, the re-building of the medieval watch tower, proposals for parking, the boutique hotels, the raising of educational standards and the needs of an ageing population.
Boxall has earned the respect of the whole spectrum of the Vittoriosa society, political, parochial and social mainly for his guiding principle: that of putting the interest of his community above all other considerations.
As recently described by a visiting foreigner he is “a very humble person who has changed a city”.
