Restoration works on the Mdina bastions are to continue with the help of EU funds, Parliamentary Secretary Ian Borg said this morning.

He said the new works will cover the bastions from the Greek’s Gate to Mtarfa Gate as well as the bastion beneath the Cathedral, which is visible from Ta’ Qali.

Other projects being undertaken include a horse shelter at the parking area near the main entrance to the old city. This will have space for nine horses. Some of the parking spaces to be taken to make way for the shelter are not available for public use.

The Parliamentary Secretary said that railings would also be put up around Howard Garden.

The works will cost €1 million.

Dr Borg said discussions were underway for consolidation works on other buildings, such as Casino Notabile, to be undertaken.

All works would be concluded by mid-July next year.

Other future projects being considered include stairs from the ditch to the city, to discourage people from using the narrow Mina tal-Madonna, which could be dangerous as it was also used by cars, and the relocation of the council offices, currently on the first floor, rendering them inaccessible to some.
