Lorraine Balzan and her three-year-old daughter Nicole – who is currently fighting cancer – are the winners of the ‘Share your Sunshine competition, organised by Atlas Insurance. She won a €2,000 travel voucher to use towards the dream trip of her choice.

Ms Balzan thanked Atlas for giving her the opportunity to share her ‘daily sunshine’ – her daughter Nicole.

“We are very grateful for giving us the chance to have a family vacation altogether, where we can relax and forget for a while the problems that life throws at us,” she said. “Nicole and her sister Jade are both extremely excited. This vacation will be all about having fun and spending quality time as a family, something we haven’t been able to do for a long while.”

“The aim of the ‘Share Your Sunshine’ competition was to invite our Facebook community to tell us what gives them sunshine in their lives. The ‘sunshine’ could be anything – their children, pets, their car, or even a special memory like a travel experience or their wedding proposal,” said Jackie Attard Montalto, manager HR and marketing.

Gift to Ladybird Foundation

The Middlesea Insurance Social and Events Committee recently presented a donation to the Ladybird Foundation. These funds were collected during dress down days which are organised weekly at Middlesea.

The Ladybird Foundation was set up in order to provide joy and relief to terminally, critically or seriously ill children giving them and their families the opportunity (sometimes the last opportunity) to go on vacation together or otherwise spend quality time with each other.

The foundation has already helped around 24 children to fulfil a dream they had, usually by sending their entire families to have magical experiences overseas, such as trips to Disneyland, cruises, holidays to watch their favourite football teams and meet their favourite players and to spend quality time in tranquil retreats, while always making sure that their medical needs are fully taken care of.

Volunteer leave forAtlas staff

To commemorate its 10th anniversary as a company, the Atlas Group has given its staff two extra days of paid leave to volunteer with the charity of their choice.

This was announced during the second edition of Atlas Day, a full day of staff training and development.

“Part of the Atlas Vision has always been a purpose beyond profit. By giving our staff the option for Volunteering Days, we feel that we are helping to fulfil this aim – giving back to the community and helping those who need our support,” said Michael Gatt, Atlas Group CEO.

Hybrid poles at Laguna Walk

SmartCity Malta has invested in 11 hybrid poles to light up the promenade at Laguna Walk, leading on to Xgħajra.

The poles are a self-sustaining system of road lighting powered solely by renewable energy sources, including wind energy, through the top-mounted wind turbine, and solar energy, from the mounted solar panel.

The new promenade hybrid poles generate energy that is stored automatically in a gel type battery which is able to power the pole for around 72 hours.

From its inception, SmartCity Malta has adopted globally benchmarked environmentally-friendly practices to make its global network of self-sustained business parks highly energy- and resource-efficient.
