A scheme giving people and businesses who have fallen behind in their water and electricity payments a partial exemption on the interest due on their bills has been launched.

The government said in a statement this evening the scheme was drawn up following several meetings including with employer organisations. The regularisation period will come into effect on September 1 and will end on October 31.

Those who opt to pay all their dues during the period will save 75 per cent of the interest due.

Those who pay within a month after the period will save 50 per cent of the interest due and those who pay within two months following the closure of the scheme will save 25 per cent on the interest due.
